My roommate's last day

Well Monday was my roomy's last day. She was in girl scouts and apparently got a hold of the Russian Scouting office here and we tried to go meet up with one of the guys from the office. But when we made it there the phone number we had didn't work so we didn't get to meet up with the guy. I then got to finally pick up some of Gogol's short stories and Dostoevsky's "Brothers Karamazov". Lets just say my bag is now half way packed with books. I am not sure if my clothes will all fit. Thankfully I brought an empty bag with me. Well when I got back my roommate finished packing and then she played the Russian birthday song and American birthday song on a Russian instrument that she bought. It was so cool ! We then watched the cheburashka showes.  I am kind of missing my roommate. We were very similar. She is a history major with a minor in Russian. I am a Russian major with a history minor.
Anyways I need to get some sleep. I will write tomorrow about what we did for my birthday! It was so much Fun!!!!

Weekend of week 4

The last few days have been really busy and by the time I get home I am exhausted, so I haven't been writing as much lately.
This past weekend:
Saturday I went to the Izmailov souvenir fair. I am apparently a good bargainer. One of my friends requested that I bring him home one of the Russian fur hats. Well I of course wanted to get him the real fur one. When I went to look at a black fox fur hat the guy asked for 5000 roubles about $160ish. I told him I could pay about a 1000 and ended up only paying 1500 roubles about $45. I thought I did pretty good. I then proceeded to buy everything cheburashka. :D We then went to the Vodka history museum and bought some Vodka...yes Russia has a museum dedicated to vodka. That evening we attempted to go out. But when I went to go get my friend she passed out asleep. So I hung out with my roommate and my insomnia got the better of me. I can't get myself to fall asleep or sleep well when I do go to sleep.
Sunday my roommate and I went to the State History Museum. That place was so cool!! The crowns from the 12th century. The amazing and really shiny swords. The intricate military uniforms. The old school carriages! It was all so amazing! It was even more fun trying to guess what some things were. Thankfully my roommate and I had enough history and Russian knowledge to figure out most things.

Last weekend when I hung out with my Russian friends they took us by the largest active church in Moscow. During the soviet era Stalin had this church destroyed and turned into a pool. It wasn't rebuilt until about 1995. My friend doesn't like the church, because to him it is fake. Also, He doesn't like that the government put a large amount of money into rebuilding the church instead of helping the people in a time when everyone was starving and in great need. It is also a truly ancient church like St. Basil's, because it is only recently built.Thus, doesn't have as much historical value.

About 2 weeks ago we got a new student in the program. She is prior Army enlisted. She played French horn in the Army band. Despite the rival between our branches we get a long great. I love hearing some of her stories and we swap training stories. It makes me even more anxious about going active. I can't wait!

Well I just got back from hanging out with some of my classmates and some Russian friends. It is Friday night and we had a long week of class. I can't believe another week is coming to an end. I have learned so much while being here. On Thursday I had my individual lesson with my teacher. We had a conversation in Russian for nearly 90 mins. There was very little English used. My professor is great. She has helped me become much more confident in my speaking abilities. I am also starting to actually comprehend all of the grammar. I bought some Russian textbooks to bring back with me. One of them is a simplified Russian history book. So excited to read about Russian history in Russian while in Russia!!! I also found a Russian/Arabic book. It is Arabic fairy tales written in Arabic and Russian. I am nerdly excited about translating that book in both of those languages.
Another then class, I didn't do a whole lot. After class I just took a nap. I haven't been able to sleep most of the week or at least sleep well. I finally got about 2ish hours of decent sleep. Then went to the store to get some groceries...ok more of snack/junk food. What can I say I am a college student who is avoiding using the kitchen. This is mainly due to how deformed and unclean the kitchen utensils are. Anyways, Russia has so many different types of juices. I am addicted to the cherry juice. My roommate really likes the strawberry juice. I think I am going to try some before I leave. I then got some chips and was happy that I didn't need the pictures to tell me what I was eating. They have bacon chips...so yummy! My friend got crab chips and caviar chips...I don't plan on trying these at all. OOO, yesterday I bought some ice cream. Well when I bought I read chocolate on the wrapper twice (which was all I needed to persuade me to buy it) But I  figured it was an ice cream sandwich...However it was a giant block of very tasty ice cream.
Then when I was hanging out with the Russians I attempted to speak Russian with them. That was really cool. They would answer in English. This way we both got practice.
Tomorrow we are going to the souvenir fair! I am so ready to buy some souvenirs that are not all books, even though I love my books.
Well it is 1 a.m. and I got to get up at 7 to talk to my father (who is in Texas) and my sister (who is in Singapore). I am not sure how we figured out a time that works for all 3 of us.

Monday:
It isn't every day that you get to see a friend from field training in Moscow. At 5:30 a.m. I went to catch the 1st metro of the morning. When I got off there was a friend from field training waiting for me. We were in the same flight last year and I found out that he was in Moscow for 2 days I did my best to see him. We got to hang out before he had to catch the train to Siberia. I found it amazing to be able to see a friend who I haven't seen in a year in another country. It is definitely a small world. When I made back to campus I had to drink a lot of coffee or more of a liquid donut (it had a lot of sugar in it). As a lot of you know coffee and are not a good combo...but I survived class and learned a lot. Then we attempted to go play soccer, but someone was mowing the yard and shooed us away. That evening we got to go to the opera. I kept an open mind as I went to it. The Opera was Evgeny Onegin based on Pushkin's novel and made into an opera by Tchaikovsky. I have read the novel before, but wasn't sure if I would like the opera. The 1st part was a little to slow for me. But, I really liked the 2nd  half. I was in awe over the music and the singing. I got excite when I knew some of the words they were singing.
Tuesday:
We just had class, but for once everything just clicked. The light bulb in my head is beginning to slowly flicker on. After class I did my homework and then made flashcards for 3 hours. Not that exciting but wait until all of those flashcards cover my apartment walls back in the states.
Wednesday:
After breakfast today, 3 of us decided to go to the Central Armed Forces Museum. We didn't have class until 2:15 and I wanted to go check out the museum. It was amazing, even though I couldn't read all of it. (I took pictures of some of the descriptions to translate later). This place was perfect for someone who loves history and the military. The Russians were very proud about beating the Nazis, there were giant boxes full of  iron crosses. We went outside and found some cool military equipment. There were migs, tanks, and rockets. It was so cool!!! There were some soldiers in charge of keeping the equipment clean. I asked one of them if I get a picture with him (in really good Russian). He seemed surprised and excited about it. He also wanted to take a picture with my friend YaMila. I think he was surprised to see a black woman. It was kind of funny. He ran to go get his phone and his friend. I was happy to understand part of his Russian.
This evening on the way home from the store I was asked by a Russian if I was German. I replied "no" even though I am part German. After seeing how happy the Russians were about defeating the Nazis, I am pretty sure they are not big fans of Germans.
It was a great couple of days! I am sad that I only have a few days left here.

I apologize for not writing. This weekend was very busy. So be prepared, this will probably become a long blog.

Men in tights: Well Friday night we went to go "Sleeping Beauty". Even though I am not as interested in performing arts as I am literature it was still an amazing performance. The dancers did a fantastic job, I was highly impressed on the pure muscle they had to have to be able to do some of the things they were doing. One of the girls was on her tiptoes for what seemed like a good 2 minutes or even longer. It looked painful. Then their costumes were so beautiful. Even from being on the balcony I could still see how much detail was on their costumes. The one thing I wonder is how can they wear these tight clothes and not get wedgies during mid performance....just wondering. 

Historical paintings: Yet again I am not that interested in paintings and art, but Saturday morning when I walked through the Tretaykov gallery I felt like I was looking at history. My favorite part was the 12 and 13th century art. It was all of the art work I had learned about: the first martyrs for the orthodox church Boris and Gleb, St. George and the dragon and so many more. It was so amazing. I am really glad that I have had the chance to learn about all of these historic paintings and was able to actually appreciate them. 

American food: Saturday afternoon I got to meet a future teacher for Tech (his name is Anton) and his girlfriend( Marina). They were really nice and we worked a little on Russian and English. I am hoping the next time we hang out that we speak more Russian. Marina loves literature like I do and so we ended up walking to many of the famous Russian writers statues. It was wonderful and almost unrealistic. I couldn't believe I was walking by the houses that these great writers had lived in. It was awesome that Marina knew so much about a lot of the Russian writers.She was surprised I had heard and read so many Russian works. I felt like my friend Sunny and I had our very own tour guides. While we were walking around the city we stopped to get blinis which are like pancakes with filling. They were delicious. I then found it surprising that Anton's favorite restaurant is a play off old American diners http://www.starlite.ru/ . This diner was pretty good. The burgers weren't too bad, however it became hard to eat when a group of Russians came up behind our table and were discussing that the burgers were made out of dog...I am going to go with this not being true.I hope.  Anton also loves Mexican food. He will at least not go hungry when he moves to Lubbock. 

Then when I returned to the doors we hung out on one of our classmate's floor. His floor is all Russians, except for him. It was the last night of one of our classmates. So we wanted to hang out with her before she left. Well apparently the Russians were already partying and decided to join us. One of the guys had studied music and decided to play a bunch of American songs for us. He was really good. We then all talked in a mix of Russian and English. It was interesting to watch people communicate when they don't completely understand the other person's language. We managed to do pretty well and got to practice our Russian, while the Russians got to practice their English. It was a fun night.

Well this morning when I woke up and went to the bathroom I had noticed there was the microwave in the bathroom. I was really unsure what all had happened on my floor last night for there to be the microwave in the bathroom. Apparently the fuse in the kitchen had blown and so I guess the next best option was to put the microwave in the bathroom. I will definitely not be using the microwave and am hoping this does not become a fire hazard. 

Well, I need to get ready to go to a park that is dedicated to Bulgakov's novel Master and Margarita. We decided to do our homework out there.

Football...I mean soccer

The last 2 days I have basically just had class. Yesterday I had three hours of language class followed by 3 hours of Political Science. It was very interesting to listen to. However, I would have preferred if it was a history class, because politics don't interest me as much. My favorite part was when he went on a tangent about a story called "Heart of a Dog" by Nabokov...it was a very good story. I still am in awe that I am learning about Russia in Russia...I don't think that will rub off any time soon. I am trying to soak up as much as possible before I have to leave. I wish my brain was a sponge.
I cooked dinner last night...yet again I wasn't 100% sure what I was eating. I think it was chicken and pasta, at least that is my best guess.
Today I had language class and then was suppose to have my 2 hour individual class...but someone else got to go instead of me. I really hope I get to go tomorrow. I really enjoy talking to my teacher. Today in class we discussed Chekhov, Pushkin, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky...in Russian. She was surprised that I had read so many of these authors (yes I have read each of those authors, in English). She was even more surprised that I had read War and Peace by Tolstoy and Brother's Karamazov by Doestoevsky. I actually want to re read that book.
Some of the students from Tech were suppose to meet with a Russian who is coming to Tech in the fall to teach and go to grad school, however he had to work late. We are hoping to meet up with him on Saturday. It will be nice to have a Russian contact and we can help him when he comes to the states.
Then this evening I went to go kick the "football" around with a guy from the Netherlands and one of my friends. All I can say is I thought I had bad hand-eye coordination...I definetly have worse foot-eye coordination. The Russians who were running on the track looked like they were laughing. I attempted to get the ball before the Netherlander and I had no chance...it was so sad that it was hilarious. I am waiting to see how many bruises I will have on my shins in the morning.
Well it is midnight here and tomorrow night we are going to the ballet!! I have never been to an official ballet. I am excited! We are all dressing up (yes Grandpa Gruff I will post pictures of this) and then going to explore the city afterwards hopefully.

Russian Independence Day!

Today was Russian independence day. It was a day where most people had the day off and all of the museums were free or really cheap. Thus, two of my classmates and I went to the zoo. It was really crowded and the zoo was huge. We needed a gps just to get around the place. I decided when I come back to Russia I am bringing rain boots and a gps. We got to see a lot of the animals at the zoo, but of course the day we decided to go it was finally really warm (it was also the day I stupidly decided to wear a long sleeved button up shirt). We were really jealous of the polar bear and her cub who were swimming around in the nice cool water. Oh and we found where all of the ice in Russia went...to the polar bears. I wonder if the polar bears took all of the air conditioners as well. OOO and I got to see penguins!!! They were cute, but need some more love. I don't think they even got ice in their encounter...I guess the Russians definitely take pride in their bears.
The rest of my evening won't excite you much. However, I am realizing how much Russia is taking over my brain. I was working on my Russian homework, while listening to Russian music and was drinking vodka and orange juice ( don't worry there was very little vodka...I learned that it helps me sleep).

Another adventure in the Motherland

Hmm where to begin....
Well last night I went to a Russian concert...that was really cool and a fun experience. It was a lot like what you would see at an American concert. However, I liked that it was much smaller, it was more personal. I was actually surprised that some of the djs played American music and even more surprised when the Russians started singing to it. The funniest part was when they all got excited about the djs playing the song called War. It was really hard to not bust out laughing, because of how happy they were. It was definitely a fun experience.

Then today we recovered in the morning and then one of the girls and I went out to this place called the Arbat. It is a big tourist area. But it was a lot of fun and relaxing. We saw a lot of interesting things while there. A man made some amazing pictures using spray paint, then some young guys were break dancing and doing acrobats, then there were some people playing various instruments. It was interesting to see Russia come alive in a fun way.I was really happy when some of the shop keepers thought I was Russian and tried to hold a conversation with me. I was doing pretty good until they began to speak really fast...I then had to have them slow down. Some of them liked trying to help me with my words. Then some of the other shop keepers would begin speaking to me in English, but I would respond with "da" (yes in Russian) and they were surprised I knew Russian. I love using this language. While at the Arbat I got to see the outside of Pushkin's house! I love being in such historic places. It is still very unrealistic to me. After the Arbat we decided to go find a store that the other girl has been wanting to find. Well of course we get sent to the wrong place...but it gets more interesting. We ended up asking a Russian couple if they knew where it was. They were very nice and used their phones and tried to walk us to the store...well the store ended up being an office building. The interesting part was the woman. At first she was very friendly, but as we continued to walk she just wanted to know bad words in English and a few other things. My friend and I were a little worried. We figured she meant no harm, she was just acting really weird. So as soon as we could we separated and ended up watching some Russian bag pipe players. They were really good.
Tomorrow we are going to attempt to go to the zoo. It is Russia's independence day from the U.S.S.R. so it is a national holiday...I will probably have an entertaining encounter.
Well I must sleep so I can get up earlier to talk to my Grandfather ( which I am really excited about)

So I have already discussed how the women are in Russia, now it is time to discuss the Russian men. These are interesting characters. There usually attire is: Tight jeans, a nice shirt, jewelry, loafers or dress shoes, an angry look and a murse.  For those of you who don't know what a murse is it is a man purse. Now in the states a murse would be considered anything smaller then a satchel or a laptop bag. However, in Russia they go beyond that. I have even seen a few carry small little clutches. I guess the pockets in their tight jeans are too small to carry everything they need. It is interesting.
Some other interesting facts: They will give up a seat on the metro for women, but won't hold doors open. There are very few with actual meat on their bones. But a lot of Russian seem this way because of how much they walk. Oh and they are always smoking, even while they are walking.
By the way, the Kremlin was amazing!!! I was in awe when I walked into those churches. There was so much history. I literally got goose bumps while I was standing by Ivan the Terrible's tomb. It was incredible to see all of this and learn about it all. It was a good thing they left a lot of room within the walls of the Kremlin, because almost every leader has tried to build something to leave their mark. Oh it was awesome and interesting!
Well this coming evening some of us are going to a Russian pop concert...this should be an experience. I can't wait to meet more Russians and work on my Russian.

Moscow never sleeps

The last two days have been really busy. Yesterday I had three hours of  language class and then I had 2 hours of individual lesson with the teacher. It was intense, when I was done I couldn't think in English anymore. I still have to concentrate hard on constructing a sentence in English. My professor and I read a story in Russian and it was by Pushkin, one of my favorite authors. I enjoyed practicing my listening and reading a story by Pushkin. I found it funny though that it was about a love triangle...of course this would be a Russian story written by one of the most famous Russian writers.I was excited that I could actually read this story in Russian.
Another Russian superstition: Don't whistle inside...you will whistle away your money and everyone else's money. One of the guys was whistling inside and the program director told him that this was not allowed. Apparently this is true of anywhere indoors.
OOOO we FINALLY got hot water again! Apparently they do this every summer. They try to conserve the energy so they take away the hot water in a certain area for a small amount of time and then another area and so on. I was so happy that I could actually take a shower longer then 2 minutes.
Russians definitely know how to hold their alcohol. We hung out with some of them last night and they drank a lot and then said they had a test the next day. They said it won't be a problem for them to study and take the test. It was nice to speak Russian with them and to help them with their English. Also, we get to learn about their culture and day to day life.
This weekend is a 4 day weekend. On Tuesday it is the Day of Russia ( the day Russia became independent from the Soviet Union).  We are going to try to see some of the festivities.
Well, tomorrow we are going to see the Kremlin and I need some sleep. I can not wait to actually go inside. We will see Lenin's tomb most likely...not sure how I feel about seeing a preserved dead dude...they should have just let him become bones like everyone else. I also, hopefully get to see where most of the Russian tsars who ruled from the 1300s to the late 1600s were buried! Then I get the see the Armory and a few other things!  I feel like history is coming alive! So excited!

I apologize for not writing the other night. I was beyond exhausted by the time I got home and had finished my homework. On Tuesday I got to go on this amazing boat tour on the Moscow River. We got to see the Peter the Great statue, the Kremlin, and so many other things. It was nice to be able to just ride the boat and not walk every where. It was a lot of fun and relaxing. After words we went to another bookstore...I need to quit going to these bookstores. I found a movie of the old Russian cartoon. It is helping me with my Russian.
Then today we just a Current Events in Russia class. It was really interesting. We discussed the Russian political system. I was excited about learning this information from an actual Russian. I feel like it is Christmas every day here. I get so excited about everything that we do. If only the Russians actually smiled here, it would make just a little bit better. Oh and if we had hot water or even warm water. That would be nice. We are hopefully getting our hot water back tomorrow. I feel like this water gets colder every time I shower. OOO exciting news: I found Toy Story 1 - 3 in Russian on DVD!!! It was only about $15 for all three movies. I was so happy! I will probably work on watching one tomorrow and trying to learn new vocab. I am okay with learning Russian while watching Toy Story, it is putting two of my favorite things together!!!
Well tomorrow we have our first test and I should study more and get some sleep too.
Side note: my aggie floor mates are back and I can definately tell they are aggies. One attempted to cook bacon/ham looking substance on top of the toaster oven and failed. For some reason he could not use a pan and the stove top to cook this.

Finally a Sunny Day

After class today, the weather was beautiful! Thus, we all decided to go back to Gorky park and just relax. It was amazing and very beautiful! I honestly just wanted to take a nap on the bench. I should have brought my book to read. If I go back there before I leave I am bringing socks and renting some roller blades. Everyone roller blades around here. It is so exciting! I really wanted to roller blade.
 Then once we got back to the dorms, one of the ladies said she was going for a run and for some crazy reason I decided to go with her. I guess it was the next best thing to karate...oh how I would love to have a punching bag and gloves in my room right now. Somehow I ran 2 miles, and in between each lap I did push ups, sit ups, the plank, or squats. I feel amazing. Why can't I work out like this when I am back home???
Well it is really late and tomorrow after class we are going on a boat tour around the Moscow river!!!

Relaxing Sunday

Well today we didn't do anything crazy. We were all exhausted from our first week of being here. So around 1ish when we had all raised from the sleeping dead we went to McDonalds and got hot chocolate and some got meals. They wanted something quick and American. So of course we picked McDonalds. Then we went to the market to get some study snacks and some food for dinners for the week. Oh and then I got some Theraflu because of a stupid cold I got due to the weather and not sleeping.
Then we spent the rest of the afternoon studying...well kind of.
I dreadfully took a shower. The water is ice cold. Until 7 June we do not have any hot water. Russian cold water seems colder then American cold water. It is sooo cold. I dread taking showers, but it was necessary.
Oh then one of my friends and I attempted to watch Transformers in Russians. They were speaking too fast. So we decided to watch kids cartoons on youtube.

Well, I need my sleep. Tomorrow will be a long and exciting day!!!

Russian Superstitions

It was Saturday today, thus we did not have any classes. It was nice, because we got a day to relax, but of course it was raining. We ended up in an underground mall and some of the people got some going out clothes. But before all that this morning while one of the girls and I were waiting for the guys to come down from their rooms the other girl decided to sit  on the step to wait. Which isn't anything unusual, well in the U.S. at least. After she sat there for a few minutes an older woman came up to the steps and started saying something in Russian. Thankfully I could understand what the woman was saying. She said that we shouldn't sit on cold concrete because you will get sick. I then remembered learning that Russians believe that. It was a nice piece of culture that we got to experience.
My favorite part of the whole day was going to a giant Russian bookstore!!! When we separated to go look around we said that we would all meet back in 20 minutes. I needed like 20 hours to be in there! I felt like a kid locked in a candy store! It was amazing! I found the jackpot section, it had Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Gogol and so many others. I grabbed a huge stack and met back up with my friends and they stared at me. I then realized that I will be here a month and don't need to take the whole bookstore home with me today, even though I really wanted to. I ended up with a kids book about the chubyrashka and Gena the crocodile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sICgWJ46_4E It is a famous Russian children's story. One of the guys and I were so excited to find one of these books. We looked like little kids on Christmas. Another one of the guys made fun of me because I didn't let the book out of my sight all day. I am too tired to read it tonight, but I definitely will be reading it tomorrow!!!
Oh I forgot to add my other favorite part. I got to see Pushkin's statue!!! Omg, I took a bazillion pictures I could have stayed there for hours. He was a famous Russian writer. He is my second favorite Russian writer. I now can't wait to see Dostoevsky's house and Gogol's and Tolstoy's. So excited. I keep trying to look pissed off and Russian, but I am way too happy for that.
I apologize for not writing more. But it has been a long week and my bed springs are about to push out the top of my bed and the sun comes up at 4 a. m. and goes down at 11 p.m. I have still not gotten use to not waking up with the sun.

Trying to cook in Russia

Today I attempted to cook dinner for our group, because we decided to stay in and relax for the evening. Somehow I was the one who ended up cooking the dinner. When we went shopping we couldn't really read what we were buying, thus we just kind of went with what looked like it might taste good...this was a bad idea. We thought we bought chicken...we bought pork...I think. Oh well some of us ate it and no one has had to be rushed to the hospital yet. I ended up cooking pork with noodles, mushroom sauce (I think), corn and peas. 

I just finished doing laundry, well sort of. There is no dryer, so my laundry is now setting on this metal thing drying. Thankfully I didn't put all of my jeans in the washer. I probably would have if I could have actually fit it in there. The washer machine is really tiny, I was lucky I could what I did in there. 

So the other day I mentioned the toilet paper. It comes in red raspberry, green apple and some other color/smell(at least I think it is smell). Oh and when you go out don't forget to check to make sure there is toilet paper in the stall, because sometimes they don't have the toilet paper in the stall. You have to get it before you go into the stall. 

Today we got to see the Kuskovo Estate (http://www.moscowcity.com/attractions/kuskovo.htm). It was really pretty and a great place to have a wedding at, but wasn't my cup of tea. We actually got to see some of the wedding parties take pictures around the place. Their wedding dresses are very similar to us. I am going to try to find out more about how the whole marriage and wedding process goes. 

Well it is 1 am and we are going to get to see more of Pushkin's statue tomorrow(or I guess today), so I need to be well rested for that. I am so excited!!
